I’m Here, Soft & Haptic 2024 [2024]

Performance, Video and site-specific mixed-media installation (Vintage frame, Two-way Mirror, Video Monitor, iPhone SE, Closed circuit installation)

Statement

'This work by Wirz, building on his ongoing explorations into livestreaming as a medium for performance, with all its associated glitches and gaffes, stages a monitor screen behind the screen of a two way mirror; this allows for the livestream performer to call in and be “present” within the gallery. The in-person visitor may not know this and naturally feels invited to check up on themselves in the mirror, only to realise they are not alone in looking.’ - Cameron McClellan

Statement

I was told, all virtual live art is crap” by a prominent Art World figure.

The collaborative project, DEAD AIR, responds to this statement, exploring both the formal and conceptual possibilities that the new technology of live-streaming presents. We capitalise on the lightness, agility, and versatility afforded by smartphone-based streaming as a counterpoint to the cliché of a performer addressing a static camera.

This project will bring together a diverse mix of collaborators to deliver a regular programme. Crucially, these performances will cater exclusively to virtual audiences, guaranteeing a unified experience without distinction between physical and virtual audience members. Our aim for this project is to democratise access to live art and create a unique formal experience.
